Schott Systeme Showcase Combined 2D CAD and Graphics 

With the introduction of 3D design, many companies tend to overlook the continued need for dedicated 2D CAD and graphic design tools. However in a move to re-emphasis the true importance of 2D design, German CAD/CAM developer Schott Systeme have published a new demonstration video to highlight areas where dedicated 2D CAD and graphics are essential.

Initial Concepts

Taking the design of a handheld electronic measuring device, initial concept ideas were firstly provided in the form of pencil sketches. With few CAD systems actually offering a direct link to a scanner, Schott Systeme's CAD/CAM software 'Pictures by PC' provides the ability to directly scan such sketches and insert them into the CAD drawing. More interestingly, scanned bitmap images can also be automatically vectorised and converted into vector based geometry, with both methods helping to reduce the number of steps required to get from initial concept sketches to the creation of part geometry.

Graphics versus CAD

Many 2D designs include a graphical element, as opposed to just typical CAD geometry. In the case of the above mentioned electronic device, both the buttons and keypad required a range of associated symbols and graphics. With Pictures by PC originally starting out as being a dedicated graphics package, it already includes a large range of ready to use symbol libraries. However the video demonstration also helps to highlight how Schott Systeme's Business Graphics tools can be used within 2D design to parametrically create and alter a range of graphic layouts, far quicker than with normal CAD.

2D Layouts

Positioning CAD geometry normally involves moving it to a specific coordinate or through a specific distance, in short accurate placement. However what happens if objects just need to be centrally positioned to others regardless of where they are. Stemming from the graphical background of Pictures by PC, a complete range of adjustment tools help users to quickly and easily position objects in relation to others. As witnessed in the video presentation, a number of symbols and graphics are automatically positioned without the need to enter a single distance or coordinate.
