Often overlooked by
the mainstream CAD/CAM software companies, professional engraving is essential
to industries such as signmaking, jewelry manufacture and moldmaking.
Ensuring then that their customers can engrave, German based CAD/CAM developer Schott Systeme
not only continue to include these tools as standard within their software ‘Pictures by PC’.
They are also looking for fresh ways to further speed up engraving design and machining.
From Art to Part
‘Cliparts’ for example provide one of the largest sources of ready made graphics,
easily found both on the internet and in the form of clipart library CD’s. Look past the typical graphics associated with business presentations, and one can actually find a wealth of quality designs and artwork. Sadly CAD/CAM developers tend not to offer the ability to import and convert cliparts into CAD geometry, however Schott Systeme have now introduced exactly that, enabling users to use and modify existing clipart graphics to create new designs to engrave.

Sketching Ideas
For those receiving hand drawn designs, Schott Systeme have improved upon the workflow of their bitmap vectorisation suite. With an inbuilt twain interface to connect Pictures and a scanner, one click will now scan and insert a sketched graphic. The raster bitmap can be converted into CAD geometry, with numerous settings helping to deal with the differing quality of images. Pictures also smoothes the resulting polygon based graphic, transforming it into Bezier based curved geometry.
Engraving Machining Methods
In a move to dramatically cut down on the time required to program an engraving, recent enhancements have also seen customers being able to save preferred method of machining. Applicable for all aspects of engraving, from 2D through to 4 axis rotary and 5 axis simultaneous engraving, a customer can save their preferred methods of engraving, for instant application
on new designs. Although useful for any aspect of machining, it lends itself ideally to engraving, especially with the very specific tool parameters and milling settings required.
