Systeme Innovate with Direct Modelling and 3D Feature Recognition

Ideal
for companies requiring a neutral platform for the modification of 3D CAD
data, German based CAD/CAM developer Schott Systeme GmbH are promoting
their latest suite of 3D modification tools in a new online video.
Supplied as standard within their design solution ‘Pictures by PC’,
these tools are providing companies with a greater level of 3D
interoperability through the reuse of 3D data from other CAD systems.

Direct Modelling
Distancing themselves from the
typical parametric based method of modelling, where each individual step
of the construction process is recorded in a part ‘feature history’,
Schott Systeme are instead supplying a new range of ‘Direct’ modelling
tools. A method of construction recently adopted by a number of other CAD
systems, but one that has actually been promoted by Schott Systeme for
almost 15 years now, direct modelling enables the instant modification of
individual faces on any 3D solid part. By being able to quickly and easily
modify 3D models from other CAD systems in this way, without requiring the
original construction ‘feature history’, companies are more readily
able to maximise on the reuse of the 3D data throughout the entire product
life cycle.

3D Feature Recognition
To accompany this, Schott
Systeme have also developed a range of 3D feature recognition tools to aid
in the instant selection of faces requiring modification. In effect
providing the ability to analyse a 3D model for it’s component features,
the 3D recognition helps to automatically find multiple features such as
arrayed holes and pockets. Also by entering specific search criteria, such
as a face radius, the tools enable the ‘defeaturing’ of a model, where
complex forms such as fillets can be automatically removed to leave a far
simpler model, ideal for facility management and technical documentation.
